Computer Artwork Guidelines

Operating System Format
Our systems are IBM Compatible running Microsoft Windows.  We prefer files and diskettes that are compatible with IBM systems.

Acceptable File Extensions
Adobe Illustrator (AI), Adobe Illustrator (EPS), AutoCAD release 10,11 or 12 (DXF), Windows Metafile/Bitmap (BMP), Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), Tagged Image File Format (TIFF), Adobe PhotoShop (PSD), Gerber Artwork Definition (GAD), Gerber Plot File (PLT), and HPGL (PRN).

What Type of File Works Best?
When supplying artwork for use in the production of large graphics, a vector image format is the best choice.  A vector image is composed of lines and various shapes.  Example: a blueprint that consists of a collection of lines and shapes.  These types of images can be scaled to any size with very little effect on quality.

Appropriate vector formats include Adobe Illustrator files up to version 8.0 in which the entire file including fonts has had their paths outlined, or AutoCAD release 10, 11 or 12 file formats.  The Adobe Illustrator formats are preferable for most applications as they handle smooth bezier curves.  AutoCAD (DXF) files use short line segments to create curves.  When saving from a Macintosh platform either save as an .eps file or ad the .ai extension,.  The EPS extension used by Adobe Illustrator file format has several variations, be sure to specify IBM when necessary.

When supplying photographs and images for large format digital printing, a raster image works well.  A raster image (,tiff, .bmp, .jpg, .psd ) is composed of individual pixels. The file size of the image is determined by the number of pixels.  These images can be produced in programs like Adobe PhotoShop.

Raster images supplied for large format printing need special consideration.  The best possible results are achieved when the actual size of the file (in inches at 300 dpi)) is at least ¼ the desired size of the finished product.
